London’s Children falling behind on activity

London Sport

Sport England’s newest Active Lives data shows children and young people in England are more active than ever, with activity levels reaching their highest point since the survey began.

London hasn’t kept pace with that progress.

The 2024/25 figures show London lagging behind the national average on both ends of the activity scale, with more than half of young Londoners still not meeting daily activity guidelines.

  • Just 47% of children and young people in London met the Chief Medical Officer’s guideline of 60 or more minutes of activity a day in 2024/25, below the England average of 49%
  • That means an estimated 594,600 young Londoners, more than half the capitals under 16 population, are still not reaching recommended activity levels
  • 30% of London’s children are classed as “less active” (under 30 minutes a day), a higher rate than the 28% national figure
  • London recorded no significant year on year change in 2024/25, meaning the national uplift in activity levels has not been mirrored in London
