We have recently created an internal LS document that pulls together multiple examples of Prehabilitation programmes. Such programmes can be classified as ‘waiting well’ and share the same goals: to reduce mortality, recurrence and spread; to improve physical and wellbeing measures among patients; and to reduce cost to the NHS.
But there are different approaches:
- Creating opportunities for patients to be more physically active
- Adding nutrition and wellbeing support
- Focussing on specific cancers / sites, or offering a universal programme
- Educating health care professionals, carers and patients to be confident and knowledgeable about the benefits of physical activity among cancer patients
We focussed on the impact of Cancer programmes into the impact of the following programmes:
- Prehab4Cancer in Manchester claims an average of £844 NHS saving per patient
- Articles in Journal of Oncology claims £785 / patient
- Barts Health in London claims in excess of £3.5k / patient for Gynae, and £563 for HPB
- Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals claims £643+ for Lung
- Sheffield Training Hospitals claims £366 / patient
All of these programmes demonstrate successes across an array of health and wellbeing measures. London Sport are proposing a standardised set of measures to understand impact in a consistent way.
