The Department of Transport has released the latest Transport Statistics for Great Britain for 2017. A total of 801 billion miles were travelled across the UK. This publication breaks down the statistics by travel mode, trip purpose, road casualties and commuting trends. Key findings include:

- Walking trips accounted for 3% of the total distance travelled and cycling accounted for 1% of the distance travelled

- 10% of people walk to work

- 51% of children aged 5-10 walk to school and 39% of children aged 11-16 walk to school

- 2% of children aged 5-10 years cycle to school and 3% of children aged 11-16 cycle to school
