London has the highest proportion of people who currently work or volunteer in sport and physical activity, at 19%, compared with 11% across other UK regions.
However, there is still significant untapped potential. In London, 40% of respondents say they would not consider volunteering or working in the sector. At the same time, more than a third (36%) say they would be open to doing so in the future. This suggests opportunities to grow the workforce by addressing common barriers such as lack of time, confidence, and clear routes into roles.
Nationally, disengagement is higher. Almost two thirds of respondents (65%) say they would not volunteer now or in the future. Only 11% currently volunteer or work in the sector, although 20% say they might consider it at some point.
Exploring the motivations of those who are currently disengaged could provide valuable insight into how the sector can attract new volunteers and develop more inclusive and accessible pathways into sport and physical activity.
