Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE) measures the average time an individual is expected to live in “very good” or “good” general health, based on how individuals perceive their general health. The latest figures, covering 2022 to 2024, were released in February 2026.
Summary:
- The average HLE for those born now in England isĀ 61.3 years for females, and 60.9 years for males
- The average for London is higher, at 62.9 years, for both females and males. This is one of the highest areas in the UK, but the average masks the large inequalities across the capital
- Those born into the highest HLE boroughs (Richmond-upon-Thames, Sutton, Bromley) can expect 10 years additional healthy life versus those born into the Lewisham, Haringey, Greenwich.
Even within boroughs, the average will be masking differences in HLE between the most and least deprived wards and areas.
