The UK government ‘spending review’ last week focused largely on housing, defence and transport across the country. There were a raft of major infrastructure projects, and a few further details on the £86bn package of science and tech investments.
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (Lisa Nandy MP) wrote:
“I’m delighted that the DCMS has secured £8.2 billion in the Spending Review — a major investment in culture, creativity and community infrastructure across the UK. At the heart of this settlement is nearly £3 billion in capital funding. This will allow us to invest in community sports facilities, youth centres, and cultural and heritage institutions — the spaces that promote wellbeing, create opportunities for young people, and preserve and celebrate our national story.”
Key points for Sport:
- The DCMS avoided both funding cuts and the threat of closure
- The overall budget for 2028–2030 will see a real-terms reduction of 1.4%
- To help bridge the gap, £132.5 million from the Dormant Assets Scheme Strategy (an existing fund) will be invested in giving children from disadvantaged areas greater access to sport, culture, and community programmes
- Part of the £2.9 million capital investment fund will also be used to improve access to local facilities and physical activity opportunities.
The response by Sport+Recreation Alliance was positive, but called for tangible government plans on key areas:
- A national plan for children’s physical activity
- Sustainable and energy efficient community sports facilities
- Drive agile skills and workforce policies
- Fully integrate our sector with the NHS
- Recognise the role that sport can play in delivering a range of social outcomes across the Government stated missions
