A new report by the Royal Society for Public Health entitled ‘Playground Rules’ finds:
- More than 90% of local authorities will see the percentage of children leaving primary school either overweight or obese increase over the next decade.
- Without action taken now, as many as 41% of children aged 10 and over could be overweight by 2035.
Picking up on the report, the Guardian have accessed more detail, and add:
- 33% of children leaving primary school were obese or overweight in 2009/10. That figure is now 36%, and RSPH predict it will be 41% by 2034-35.
- More of these children (aged 10 and 11) will be overweight or obese than not in nine council areas of England by 2035. Including Barking and Dagenham (52%) and Newham (51%).
The RSPH calls for a whole-school approach to keeping pupils moving. They reference the Active Schools Framework (image shown above).
