Inner London at risk of losing out

London Sport

The Government is proposing changes to how funding is distributed to local authorities across England. These reforms could have a significant impact on boroughs in London.

  • Inner London boroughs – including Camden, Westminster, Wandsworth, Kensington and Chelsea (K&C), and Hammersmith and Fulham (H&F) – are expected to receive less funding in real terms over the next three years.
  • In contrast, outer London boroughs such as Hillingdon, Enfield, and Havering may see increased funding, even if they raise council tax.

What does this mean for sport in inner London?

The Government local authority revenue expenditure data shows a gradual decline in local authority spending on sport across London.

Yet, Active Lives data tells us that inner London boroughs like Wandsworth, H&F, K&C, and Camden consistently report higher than average activity levels. Looking ahead, could we see a reversal – with inner London’s activity levels dropping and outer London’s improving?

If so, how do we respond? How do we protect what is working well in inner London, and ensure local communities remain active, healthy, and supported – particularly when we know that physical activity plays a vital role in easing pressure on the NHS?
