Gender stereotypes are increasing among CYP

London Sport

New reports from Youth Sport Trust reveal:

  • An increasing proportion of children and young people are agreeing that some sports are for boys and some sports are for girls.
    • 41% of boys agree, up from 35% in 2023/24, and highest among the 7-to-9 age bracket where 48% agree.
    • 25% of girls agree, up from 20% in 2023/24.
  • Only 50% of girls say that girls and boys have the same opportunities to do the sports and activities they want to outside of PE.
  • A similar proportion, 47%, of girls say that girls and boys have the opportunity to take part in the same range of sports and activities in PE.
  • Fewer still, 39%, of girls say that boys and girls sports are seen as equally important.

The report outlines how increasing gendered attitudes towards sport, a feeling the access is not equal, and experiences of sport at school go on to shape future attitudes and participation.
