Workplace Challenge are urging employers to allow their employees more time and opportunity to take part in sport and physical activity during the working week. Evidence shows that a shift in culture could not only improve the wellbeing of the working population, but also save businesses across England an estimated £2.8 billion. The manifesto encourages employers to:
- Examine the benefits of an active workforce
- Ensure management and board reporting includes employee wellbeing and activity measures
- Recruit and support workplace physical activity champions
- Discuss with employees what would make them more active
- Encourage activity and activity travel
- Challenge desk culture that prevents active lunch breaks
- Encourage employers to 'move and work', including walking meetings and standing telephone calls
- Use advice from local CSPs to create an active workforce
- Allow time off to volunteer in grassroots sport
- Introduce activity initiatives such as Workplace Challenge
