A new report (‘A Game of Inequality: The Reality of Sporting Dreams for Young Disabled People‘) by Women In Sport and Activity Alliance has concluded that inequality in sport is compounded for disabled girls.
Participation is impacted by their disability, gender stereotypes, and lower encouragement.
- 36% of disabled girls dream of reaching the top in sport, compared to 61% of disabled boys
- 44% of disabled girls say there are not enough local opportunities for them, compared to 35% disabled boys. Disabled girls cite accessing information about opportunities as a sizeable barrier (31%)
- While disabled boys feel inspired by the Paralympics, they also experience greater pressure and feelings of inadequacy. They are more likely than disabled girls to feel the Paralympics reinforces unrealistic expectations (47% vs 30%)
