Digitally excluded people are more likely to have lower levels of physical activity

London Sport

Sport England and Good Things Foundation have recently delivered new research that builds on their understanding of the overlap between digital inclusion and physical activity.

Digital barriers limiting participation in sport and physical activity are:

  • Access to device
  • Cost of wifi / data
  • Confidence to search online
  • Skills to use apps / tools
  • Worries about booking and paying
  • Trust in information
  • Language / accessibility
  • Lack of support

Recommendations from the research are:

  1. Understand barriers for the specific population you are targeting
  2. Build local support – e.g. with National Digital Inclusion Network
  3. Design platforms with those who have low digital skills in mind
  4. Build partnerships in places beyond SPA
