The Centre for London (CfL) response to the government’s recent Child Poverty Strategy (Our Children, Our Future: Tackling Child Poverty) contains reference to statistics relevant to London Sport’s goal of helping those in the most deprived communities access sport and physical activity.
Stats:
- Before housing costs, London’s child poverty rate is lower than the national average. After housing costs, the rate doubles (or worse) in 21 out of 33 boroughs
- In every London borough except one, at least 1-in-5 children live in poverty after housing costs
- In some boroughs, like Tower Hamlets, nearly half of all children are growing up below the poverty line
- More than 700,000 children in London live in poverty as of 2025
The response in the link below gives a brief overview of the government’s core strategy, and the questions it prompts (which can be accessed through the pdf in the link), as well as useful content and visuals that bring this challenge to life.
