As London faces growing pressure on space, finding new ways to support physical activity and community wellbeing has never been more important. This case study explores how a vacant retail unit in Lewisham was transformed into the Lewisham CommUNITY Space – a welcoming hub where residents could be active, connect with others and access support services in a familiar, everyday setting.
The project demonstrates the potential of non-traditional spaces to address inactivity, isolation and health inequalities, while making better use of existing local assets. Drawing on lessons from delivery, partnership working and community engagement, the case study provides practical insights for boroughs, landowners, developers and organisations interested in creating more accessible opportunities for people to move and thrive.
