Big differences in ‘Cyclability’ across London

London Sport

An upcoming article in the Journal of Transport Geography (Feb 2026) focuses on mapping the ‘cyclability’ of London:

  • ‘Cyclability’ (the quality of the cycling environment) is impacted by multiple factors – such as the presence of cycle lanes, proximity to local services (destinations), prevalence of quieter/neighbourhood streets, and ability to cycle through green spaces.
  • There are substantial differences across London – with a correlation between the Cyclability scores and actual participation in cycling across the 180,000 London postcodes included in the paper.
  • The map shown above “…illustrates the spatial distribution of the cyclability score for 10-min cycling travel time isochrones around every Greater London postcode. This shows significant spatial variation, implying an unequal distribution of good cycling environments. Such variation is more acute in Outer London, notable for larger areas of both low and high scores.”
