A new report from UK Active, based on a nationally representative sample of UK adults surveyed by Savanta, says that…
14% of adults report that they have a mental health condition.
72% of people with mental health conditions say being physically active has helped them to stay well and be less likely to be off work.
But those with a mental health condition are less likely to meet the recommended level of physical activity (150 minutes/week) – 16% compared to 23% among those with no condition.
Prevalence of mental health problems among those who had joined a gym reduced as length of membership increased.
Individuals with mental health conditions were also more likely than those with no health condition (40% vs 35%) to prefer treatment for a short-term health condition in their gym, pool and leisure centre over a hospital.
