Findings from research in America that captured exercise habits of 110,000 men and women over 30 years concludes that a mix of exercise contributes to living longer.
Headlines:
- The total amount of exercise is still the most important factor (the benefit levels off over about 6 hours moderate, or 3 hours vigorous per week)
- Most individual types of exercise reduced the risk of death from any cause
- But people who did a variety of exercise were 19% less likely to die (during the 30 year study) than those focussed on one activity
The NHS suggest a mix of both resistance training / muscle strengthening (twice a week) and aerobic exercise (150 mins moderate or 75 mins vigorous per week).
