This literature review discusses the relationship between sport or organised activity and positive mental health outcomes for young people. The report looks into the role of sport in preventing and treating mental health problems and promoting positive youth development. Key findings include:

- There are positive associations between sport and mental health outcomes at all levels of intervention.

- The strongest relationship exists for using sport to treat symptoms of clinical depression.     

- Benefits of sport may operate in various ways, including pharmacological, social or behavioural effects.
