The Young Minds survey, investigating the mental health impact of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, highlights that many young people are under increasing pressure and struggling to get the right support. Almost every young person has had to adjust to dramatic changes in their education or employment, routine and home life. Some have experienced bereavement or other traumatic experiences during the lockdown period, while groups who were already marginalised or disadvantaged are now likely to become more so.

This survey was completed with the help of 2,036 young people who have a history of mental health needs. It took place between Friday 6th June and Monday 5th July. Results reflect the damaging and worrying effects that this lockdown period has had on the mental health of young people, with 80% of respondents agreeing that the coronavirus pandemic had made their mental health worse. An even greater majority, 87%, agreed that they had felt lonely or isolated during the lockdown period.

Proposals for a government-led recovery plan are offered, including the introduction of ring-fenced funding for mental health in schools and allowing for a transition period in schools to overcome the effects of trauma or emotional distress caused by Covid-19.
