Some new figures in the latest State of London report from the City Intelligence Unit.
- 9.1m Population. 15.5% of the UK’s total population
- 1,572 km2 Area of Greater London
- 5,782 People per km2 in 2025. Compared to 450 people per km2 in England
- 41% of London residents born outside the UK. Up from 27% in 2001
- ~52% of London is Green. 19.6% of London is covered by Tree canopy
- 432km of Strategic Cycle Network. Up from 90km in 2016
- £2,280 Average rent. Compared to £1,434 in England
- £552,304 Average House Price. Compared to £290,000 in England
- £835 Gross median weekly earnings. Compared to £650 in England
They go on to make the point that these London averages can hide massive inequality for certain groups. For example:
“Londoners with protected characteristics continue to experience adverse outcomes across many indicators: they are less likely to be in well-paid jobs, to feel engaged in society, or to experience health and educational outcomes in line with the London average. Moreover, many social and economic outcomes vary by geography: where a person lives within London can meaningfully shape their life chances, given the scale of differences across the capital.”
