Sport England has dropped the first wave of data from its 2023–2024 Active Lives report – offering an early look at how the nation is moving.
Here’s what the national picture looks like – and how London compares:
- Across England, 63.7% of adults are now meeting the recommended 150+ minutes of activity per week – up versus last year – whilst London’s figures have held steady at 64.6%
- Gender and age gaps remain stark in England:
- Men continue to be more active than women (66.3% vs. 61.4% reach the recommended weekly activity levels)
- Young adults (16–24s) are leading the charge (73%), whilst those over 85s are the least active group (24.7%)
- Zooming in on London’s boroughs reveals a mixed bag:
- City of London and Bromley saw large increases in activity
- Barnet and Sutton saw significant declines
- Hackney and Waltham Forest both made strong progress in cutting inactivity
- London Sport’s target boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Brent, Lambeth, Barking & Dagenham, Southwark, Lewisham, Kensington & Chelsea, and Westminster, showed no significant changes in activity levels in this first data release
More granular, borough-level breakdowns will follow in the coming weeks.
