Active Travel: How Are Londoners Getting Around?

While London’s overall levels of active travel have stayed fairly steady this year, borough-level differences tell a deeper story.

Walking for travel remains the most common form of active transport:

  • Lewisham leads the way, with 47% of residents walking regularly, well above the London average of 40%
  • Barking & Dagenham also saw an improvement, with a 4.3% increase in walking for leisure

Cycling rates are still much lower across London (just 11% on average) but some boroughs are bucking the trend:

  • Southwark saw a big jump, with 29% of residents cycling for travel
  • Meanwhile, in Barking & Dagenham, only 4% are cycling

Some boroughs saw declines: Brent’s walking rates fell by 6%, and Westminster saw a 6% drop in walking for travel.
