A new tool funded by the Department for Transport shows that nearly one in five people based in England would cycle to work if cycling was given more investment. This is based on a scenario where English people were as likely as the Dutch to cycle trips of similar length and distance.

The cycling potential tool projects the levels of cycling that could be expected in England in four different scenarios using census data about travel to work to assess which journeys could be switched to cycling based on journey length and hills.

One of the key scenarios - Go Dutch - estimates cycling levels if England had the same cycling infrastructure and culture as the Dutch. Under this scenario, 18% of people would cycle to work compared to 3% currently, in England. English local authorities could see an average health economic benefit of £5 million per county.
