Research involving consultation with young disabled people to explore their experience of sport and physical activity during their transition from education to adulthood. The findings highlight a range of reasons why disabled people do or do not engage in sport and physical activity as they move on from education. These cover internal factors, such as having the motivation as well as the physical and psychological capability to take part, as well as external factors such as having available opportunities. Four factors that contribute to young disabled people's physical activity levels are: 1. Deterioration or change in their physical condition 2. Lack of 'life skills' such as confidence, independence and resilience 3. Fluctuating motivations 4. Other external factors such as access to sport inside and outside of school, support received from family and friends, availability of adaptive support, equipment and other resources.
